Third Houston Texas Police Officer Indicted After $100,000 To $200,000 Was Diverted To Bogus Summer Camp For Hurricane Evacuee Children

July 19th, 2008

HOUSTON, TEXAS - A Harris County Grand Jury indicted Houston Police Officer Nedra Hall Friday for aggravated perjury on the summer camp case. Hall, along with two other officers, is accused of taking funds for an allegedly bogus summer camp for hurricane evacuee children.

Houston Police Officers Tracie Denise Bell, 39, and Kirshondra Richardson, 25, were indicted earlier for stealing between $100,000 and $200,000, and for engaging in organized criminal activity. They are accused of stealing Red Cross funds by creating false records that showed they held a 2007 summer basketball camp for young Houston-area evacuees of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Hall, 43, originally claimed she had ever seen the camp paperwork or assisted Bell with it. However, she later admitted being involved in the scam. Hall could face up to 10 years in prison and $10,000 fine if convicted of the offense.

DeKalb County Georgia Police Officer Torrey Thompson Faces Murder Trial And Life In Prison After Shooting And Killing An Unarmed Man

July 18th, 2008

DEKALB COUNTY, GEORGIA - A DeKalb County police officer who shot an unarmed suspect faces a murder trial and a possible life prison sentence in the only criminal prosecution stemming from a rash of police slayings of suspects in DeKalb in 2006.

Torrey Thompson, 31, was indicted by a DeKalb grand jury Thursday, District Attorney Gwen Keyes Fleming announced. He resigned from the police department less than two months after the fatal shooting of 21-year-old Lorenzo Matthews on Sept. 12, 2006.

In a press conference Thursday evening after posting $100,000 bond at DeKalb County Jail, Thompson and his attorney proclaimed his innocence and desire to fight the felony charges against him.

“This was a tragic event. Everyone is praying to keep ourselves strong and put this behind us,” a soft-spoken Thompson said, flanked by family and friends.

Belton South Carolina Police Officer Lt. Jim Foster Indicted For Lying On Police Report

July 15th, 2008

BELTON, SOUTH CAROLINA - If a Belton police officer has been indicted, he will be placed on administrative leave, Police Chief David Dockins said.

Dockins said this week he has not received official proof of reports that Lt. Jim Foster was indicted on charges of filing a false police report.

“I have not received anything formally on that,” Dockins said. “If and when I do, he will be placed on administrative leave without pay.”

From the unofficial reports he has received, Dockins said the incident “had nothing to do with anything (Foster) did while on duty.”

Officials at the 10th Circuit Solicitor’s office said the indictment came through the S.C. Attorney General’s Office, which would contact the police department.

Foster is a police officer with the Belton Police Department, Mark Plowden, spokesperson for the S.C. Attorney General’s Office.

Grand Jury Calls For Removal Of Woodward County Oklahoma Sheriff Leslie Morton Amid Indictment On 20 Counts

May 13th, 2008

WOODWARD COUNTY, OKLAHOMA - A Woodward County grand jury is calling for removal of the county sheriff on accusations including filing bogus travel claims and willful neglect of duty, Attorney General Drew Edmondson said.

Woodward County Sheriff Leslie Morton is named in a 20-count indictment unsealed this morning in Woodward County District Court for allegedly filing false, fictitious or fraudulent claims between July 2003 and February 2005. The grand jury alleges these false claims totaled about $10,000. The indictment includes 20 alternative counts of obtaining or attempting to obtain property by trick or deception, false statements or pretenses.

The grand jury’s accusation for removal, also unsealed this morning, accuses Morton of corruption in office and willful neglect of duty. Morton is accused of willful neglect of duty for allegedly refusing to address costs incurred for the housing of Woodward County inmates in the Woods County Jail and for conduct “inconsistent with conduct becoming the chief law enforcement officer.” The corruption in office allegations mirror the false claims charges in the criminal indictment.
