Judge Rips Lorain Ohio Police Officer Stanley Marrero, Indicted For Stalking, Intimidation, Public Indecency And Dereliction Of Duty, For Doing Nothing As His Married Lover Beat His Other Married Lover - Marrero Wouldn’t Take Stand In Woman’s Defense

January 17th, 2008

ELYRIA, OHIO — County Common Pleas Judge James Burge blasted embattled Lorain police Officer Stanley Marrero from the bench Wednesday, saying Marrero put his own sexual desires before everything else. Marrero’s face flushed a bit as he sat in the back of Burge’s courtroom, where one of his former lovers, Angela Mehallick, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge for breaking the nose of Tammy Kwilecki — another of his lovers — last January.

Marrero allegedly stood by and did nothing while Mehallick beat Kwilecki, police said.

Burge said Marrero, who is under indictment for menacing by stalking, intimidation, public indecency and dereliction of duty, placed his owns desires above those of the two women, the police force and the citizens of Lorain.

“(Marrero felt) ‘to me I’m the most important person in the world. I’m the handsomest. I’m the strongest. I wear a uniform and I’m going to have what I want even if it impacts you in a way that will never be forgotten,’ ” Burge said. “ ‘… It’s going to be my way even if I have to tarnish the badge I worked so hard to put on my chest.’ ”

Burge told the two women, both of whom are married to other men, that they were victims of Marrero, who carried on simultaneous affairs with them. Burge also said that despite the pain caused by learning about the affairs, the broken nose and the criminal charges, it was for the best if it ended their relationships with Marrero.

Mehallick, who was sentenced to three days in the county jail and ordered to pay Kwilecki’s $1,400 medical bill, had been prepared to go to trial on the felonious assault charge she originally faced Wednesday. But Burge said Marrero decided, after talking with his attorney, that he wouldn’t take the stand in her defense.

It was good legal advice, Burge said, but it further demonstrated that Marrero cared only about himself.

“(The lawyer) told Mr. Marrero to look out for himself, not Angela Mehallick, and that is exactly what he did,” Burge said. “That’s the character of this man.”

Kwilecki said she went to the Lorain home of Mehallick’s sister to confront Marrero and end their affair, not to cause problems with her rival.

“I simply wanted to confront Stan,” she said. “I never did anything to provoke her — not one dirty look, not one disrespectful remark.”

But Mehallick’s attorney, Jenifer Berki, said her client mistook a pair of sunglasses Kwilecki was holding for a weapon and was only trying to protect herself from a woman whom she contends had been stalking her.

Kwilecki wasn’t just an innocent victim, she said.

“She went there to cause problems. She went there to cause a scene,” Berki said.

Marrero, who declined comment after the hearing, is suspended from his job as a police officer while his case works its way through the courts. He is accused of stalking women and intimidating his victims as well as having sex while he was supposed to be on patrol.

If convicted, he could go to prison and lose his job.
